Step towards creating a more inclusive jobs market

Our Director of Policy Gemma Hope responds to the government’s announcement that it is recruiting more 315 disability employment advisors.

In response to the government’s announcement that it is recruiting 315 more disability employment advisors, our Director of Policy Gemma Hope said:

The government’s recruitment of significantly more disability employment advisors is a welcome step towards creating a more inclusive jobs market for disabled people. It fulfils promises made in the government’s Plan For Jobs last September, and will no doubt help to make our economic recovery from the pandemic a more inclusive one.

“Indeed, our charity has called for measures such as these already, because ongoing preparations to reopen the economy mean we are at a key moment for disability rights and inclusion. This is especially true within the world of work.

Any long-term economic downturn is likely to affect disabled people more severely. Therefore, the measures announced today need to be followed up by investment in skills programmes for young people, like Kickstart, and more interventions to ensure disabled people’s rights are protected in the workplace. Today’s announcement needs to be the first of many.”
