Response to the UN's inquiry into poverty in the UK

In response to the UN's inquiry into poverty in the UK, our Director of Global Influencing and Research Dr Ola Abu Alghaib said: 

‘Philip Alston’s damning verdict on the UK’s welfare system is further evidence of how this government is failing some of the most vulnerable people in society.

‘He repeats what we and the rest of disabled community have been saying for years: that austerity has pushed disabled people into further poverty, ill health and social isolation.

‘The government needs to act quickly to end this suffering. We want clear, independent evidence that Universal Credit is safe and accessible for disabled people before anyone is switched over to it, and we want evidence that it does not cause any financial harm.

‘The government must act now to ensure that that disabled people’s human rights are not violated by a system that should be supporting them.’
