Reaction to DFID’s response following International Development Committee Inquiry report

Our Executive Director Global Influencing and Impact Tiziana Oliva reacts to DFID’s response following International Development Committee Inquiry report.

In taking on board the recommendations of the Committee, DFID will be able to increase its already considerable role in the progressive realisation of a fairer world.

Tiziana Oliva, our Executive Director Global Influencing and Impact, said:

‘DFID plays a crucial role in delivery of programmes that ensure the fundamental human rights of people with disabilities are upheld. In recent years, the UK has led the way in championing support for people with disabilities who are denied the chance to work, or the chance of a school place.

‘Vital programmes funded by DFID transform the lives of individuals, families and communities. We are pleased that DFID has renewed its commitment to be a global player in the promotion of disability inclusion across the world.

‘Our research has shown that people with disabilities are sometimes not considered in international programmes so the leverage the UK can provide on this issue remains essential.

‘We know that children with disabilities, and in particular girls, are sometimes at risk of being left behind in international development efforts. In the 21st Century, access to education shouldn’t be determined by gender and children with disabilities shouldn’t be denied a school place because of discrimination or stigma.

‘Even when children with disabilities secure a school place, many will not complete their education at disproportionate rates compared to their classmates.

‘It was reassuring to see that removing these barriers has been prioritised by DFID in their response to the International Development Committee.

‘In taking on board the recommendations of the Committee, DFID will be able to increase its already considerable role in the progressive realisation of a fairer world.’
