Now is the time to address transport discrimination
Our Director of Policy Gemma Hope responds to the latest rail fare price increases.
In response to the latest rail fare price increases, Director of Policy Gemma Hope said:
“With 41% of Britain’s rail stations not step-free, the latest fare rises need to be followed-up with real change for disabled passengers in the imminent Williams Rail Review. At Leonard Cheshire, we’ve uncovered a clear link between accessible rail and job opportunities for disabled people.
"Using modelling, our research shows that over 50,000 disabled people could be in work if Britain’s rail network was accessible. These people would add £900m to the Exchequer if they all found work.
"Now is the time to address transport discrimination, boost the economy and improve lives. After all, an estimated £4.3bn would make all stations in Britain step-free by 2030, just 2% of overall transport capital spending. This isn’t a huge ask.”
