Disabled people need to be prioritised
Our Director of Policy Gemma Hope responds to the government’s announcement (21 April 2021) on ODA budget cuts and allocation.
Responding to the ODA budget cuts and allocation, Gemma Hope, Director of Policy at Leonard Cheshire, said:
“We’re disappointed to hear the recent announcement. These cuts will have a direct impact on people with disabilities around the world, at a time when support is needed most.
"As we begin to recover from the pandemic, it’s vital that there is a clear plan of how people with disabilities will be prioritised moving forward. And while we’re pleased to see a continued commitment to girls’ education, we need clarity on exactly how girls with disabilities will be central to this focus, especially given the significant budget reduction in this area.
"As the world looks to us in a crucial year with the G7, GPE Replenishment Summit and COP26, we must demonstrate that we are still a global leader in disability inclusion and that we remain committed to sustainable development despite these cuts.
"Our leadership here is vital in ensuring people with disabilities around the world have access to their basic human rights including work, education and social opportunities, and to cut programmes back in such an important year feels like a missed opportunity for Global Britain.”
