Announcement by the Office of Rail and Road
Our response to today’s announcement by the Office of Rail and Road.
Inaccessible public transport is forcing disabled people to miss out on every day events which others take for granted
Husna Mortuza, Head of Policy and Campaigns
In response to today’s announcement by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), Leonard Cheshire’s Head of Policy and Campaigns, Husna Mortuza, said:
'The ORR is, at long last, highlighting the need to change a transport system which prevents disabled people from travelling as they choose.
'Inaccessible public transport is forcing disabled people to miss out on every day events which others take for granted – from employment opportunities, to simply spending time with family and friends.
'There has been a dire lack of progress in doing anything to change this situation.
'Disabled people cannot continue to put their lives on hold while they wait for change. We are encouraged to see the ORR finally recognise this.
'Today’s announcement includes positive changes, which we have long been calling for, including improved accessibility information and better communication between staff and passengers, so that people are not left stranded on trains.
'Now the ORR must ensure these policies are implemented quickly and effectively, so that public transport is finally fair and inclusive for all.'
